25th July 2015

Weather: SW-5, mild with sunny spells.

A quiet day was livened up by the further arrival of passage waders. Up to 20 Turnstone, some still in summer refinery could be found feeding along the sea defence whilst at 'Greenshank Groyne' , 3 Greenshank were found feeding amongst the tidal channels. Giving good photographic opportunities it allowed the plumage differences between adult summer and adult winter birds to be noted.

24 July 2015

Weather: E/N -variable. Cloud, rain later.

A brief circuit of the Lighthouse this morning saw many fledged Warblers , including Blackcaps, Reed Warbler and Whitethroats seemingly everywhere. It looks like its been a good year for them at the Lighthouse.

Many waders were on the move today including 90 Redshank, 5 Turnstone, 100 Dunlin and an adult Greenshank.

A Raven flew in off the beach mid morning and headed off inland giving its distinctive 'croak' as it went.

As is expected this time of year on the Wirral, Med Gull numbers begin to increase so it was perhaps no surprise that yet another adult bird was on the beach just off the sea defence.

7th July 2015

Weather: W-4/5, squally showers.

A stiff onshore breeze brought  reasonable numbers of Manx Shearwaters past Hoylake with 45 birds being logged moving West over the high tide. Other birds offshore included several Gannets and Sandwich Terns.

Two small flocks of Common Scoter were also offshore. These are presumably returning failed breeders or non breeding immature birds. Other duck recorded today from Hoylake included 2 Mallard and 2 Teal on the tide line.

The Hoylake Gull roost continues to increase every day with at least 200 large Gulls being recorded. An adult summer Mediterranean Gull was also recorded in the flock today.

Returning waders recorded at high tide included 102 Curlew, 6 Bar tailed Godwits and 78 Oystercatchers.
